Examples include methoxychlor, the common name for a relative of DDT used as a veterinary insecticide, and methoxyethanol, a jet fuel de-icer and a solvent for cellulose acetate. It occurs most frequently in systematic chemical names, such as 3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid, sold under various trade names as a herbicide, or 4-methoxyaniline, an intermediate in making azo dyes and pigments.
