The ethoxyl radical.
The ethoxyl radical is CH3CH2O-, derived from ethyl alcohol. Ether, more formally diethyl ether, has the systematic chemical name ethoxyethane; an ethoxide is a salt or simple compound containing this radical, for example sodium ethoxide; a compound into which the radical has been introduced is said to have been ethoxylated. The form also appears as an element in the systematic names of compounds: 3-ethoxy-2-fluorohexane. See also methoxy‑.
