Greek akantha, a thorn.

The acanthus is a genus of Mediterranean plants that have prickly leaves; the mineral acanthite, a major source of silver, forms slender pointed crystals; acanthosis is a thickening of the prickle cells in the skin, as in eczema and psoriasis.
