The thyroid.
Greek (khondros) thureoeidēs, shield-shaped (cartilage), from thureos, oblong shield.
The thyroid is a ductless gland in the neck which secretes hormones regulating growth and development, the main one being thyroxine, generated from a protein called thyroglobulin. Thyrotropin (also thyrotrophin) is a hormone secreted by the pituitary gland which regulates the production of thyroid hormones. Thyrotoxicosis is a condition caused by an excess of thyroid hormones in the bloodstream.
