A column, pillar, or tube.
Greek stulos, pillar.
Something styloid (Latin styloides, derived from Greek) is like a thin rod or stylus; a styloid process in anatomy is a slender projection of bone, such as that from the lower surface of the temporal bone of the skull. In geology, a stylolite is an irregular surface or seam within limestone or other sedimentary rock, creating columnar formations. In classical Greek architecture, a stylobate (Greek bainein, to walk) was a continuous base supporting a row of columns. A stylite was an early Christian ascetic who lived on top of a pillar.
