The stratosphere is the layer of the earth's atmosphere from about 6–50km above the earth's surface. Stratigraphy is the branch of geology concerned with the order and relative position of strata; something stratiform is arranged in layers. In meteorology, stratocumulus is cloud in a low layer of clumped or broken grey masses, while stratus is a continuous horizontal grey sheet of cloud, often with rain or snow. The adjective stratal refers to strata or a stratum; something stratified is formed or arranged into strata.

However, stratocracy is government by the army (Greek stratos, army); strategy and its relatives derive from the related stratēgos, a general (Greek agein, to lead).
