Latin stannum, tin.

In chemistry, stannous and stannic refer respectively to tin having a valency of two and four, as in stannous fluoride (SnF₂), used to fluoridate toothpaste, and stannic chloride (SnCl₄), used as a conductive coating and in ceramics. An ore or mineral containing tin is said to be stanniferous. A stannary was formerly a tin-mining district in Cornwall or Devon, whose miners were regulated by a stannary court.
