A rhizome is a continuously growing horizontal underground stem which puts out lateral shoots and adventitious roots at intervals; a rhizomorph is a root-like aggregation of hyphae in certain fungi; the rhizosphere is the region of soil in the vicinity of plant roots in which its chemistry and microbiology is influenced by them; rhizobium (Greek bios, life) is a nitrogen-fixing bacterium that is common in the soil, especially in the root nodules of leguminous plants.
