The grey matter is the darker tissue of the brain and spinal cord. Examples of its use include poliomyelitis (Greek muelos, marrow), an infectious viral disease that affects the central nervous system and can cause paralysis; polioencephalitis, infection of the brain by the poliomyelitis virus.
