The pleurae (singular pleura) are the pair of membranes lining the thorax and enveloping the lungs. Pleurisy is inflammation of the pleurae; pleurodynia (Greek odunē, pain) is severe pain in the muscles between the ribs or in the diaphragm; pleuropneumonia is pneumonia complicated with pleurisy.
