A necropolis (Greek polis, city) is a cemetery, especially a large one belonging to an ancient city; necromancy (Greek manteia, divination) is the supposed practice of communicating with the dead, especially in order to predict the future; necrosis is the death of cells in an organ or tissue due to disease, injury, or failure of the blood supply; the adjective necrotizing refers to something accompanied by necrosis, as in necrotizing fasciitis, an acute disease in which inflammation of the fasciae (the sheaths enclosing muscles or other organs) results in destruction of overlying tissues; necrology in medicine is the study of the phenomenon of death; necrophilia (Greek philia, fondness) is sexual intercourse with or attraction towards corpses.
