Mycology is the scientific study of fungi; a fungus that is mycorrhizal (Greek rhiza, root) grows in association with the roots of a plant; mycosis is a disease caused by infection with a fungus, such as ringworm or thrush; mycoprotein is protein derived from fungi, especially that produced for human consumption; a mycotoxin is any toxic substance produced by a fungus.

The longer form mycet(o)‑ is much less often encountered, the most common term here probably being mycetoma, a chronic inflammation of the tissues caused by infection with a fungus or with certain bacteria. Another example is mycetozoa, a group of fungal organisms.
