Iconology is the study of visual imagery and its symbolism and interpretation, while iconography (Greek ‑graphia, writing) is the use or study of images or symbols in the visual arts. An iconoclast (Greek klan, to break), originally someone who destroyed religious images, is now usually a figurative term for a person who attacks cherished beliefs or institutions; an iconostasis (Greek stasis, standing, stopping) is a screen bearing icons, separating the sanctuary of many Eastern churches from the nave.
