The hymen is a membrane which partially closes the opening of the vagina in virginal women; hymenectomy (Greek ektomē, excision) is its surgical excision. In some fungi, the hymenium is a surface consisting mainly of spore-bearing structures; any fungal structure which bears one is a hymenophore. The Hymenoptera (Greek pteron, wing) is a large order of insects that includes the bees, wasps, and sawflies, so called because its members have transparent or membranous wings.
