A gamete is a mature germ cell, male or female, able to undergo sexual reproduction, gamogenesis; petals of a flower that are gamopetalous are joined together.
The prefix gameto‑ refers specifically to gametes, as in gametocyte (Greek kutos, vessel), a cell that divides to make a gamete; gametangium (Greek angeion, a vessel), the cell or organ in which gametes are formed; gametophyte, the gamete-producing phase of the life cycle of plants with alternating generations.
