A person with dactylomegaly (Greek megas, megal‑, great) has one or more abnormally large fingers or toes; dactylitis is inflammation of a finger or toe; dactylology is the representation of speech by finger movements, sign language; dactylography is the study of fingerprints for identifying individuals. A dactyl is a unit of poetical metre consisting of three syllables, so called from the three bones of a finger that are taken to represent the three syllables; the associated adjective is dactylic.
