Arthritis refers to a painful inflammatory condition of the joints, whereas arthralgia (Greek algos, pain) is pain in a joint not accompanied by swelling; the surgical procedure arthroplasty (Greek plastos, formed, moulded) is the surgical remodelling of a diseased joint. In zoology, an arthropod (Greek pous, pod‑, foot, hence an animal with a jointed foot) is a member of a large group of invertebrate animals that includes insects, spiders, crustaceans, and their relatives.
