French from Latin words ending in ‑utio(n-).
Nouns have a similar sense to those formed in ‑ation, denoting an action, or an instance of an action, or its result. Examples include absolution, contribution, diminution, institution, persecution, pollution, retribution, resolution, and solution. However, electrocution is an accidental spelling, derived from electrocute by adding ‑ion.
