A substance present in the urine, especially in excess.

Greek ‑ouria, from ouron, urine.

This ending is common in medicine; a few examples are proteinuria, the presence of abnormal quantities of protein in the urine, which may indicate damage to the kidneys; bacteriuria, the presence of bacteria in the urine; polyuria (Greek polus, much), production of abnormally large volumes of dilute urine, as opposed to oliguria (Greek oligos, small), the production of abnormally small amounts; haematuria (US hematuria)(Greek haima, blood), the presence of blood in urine. Associated adjectives are formed in ‑uric: polyuric, haemauric, glycosuric (Greek glukus, sweet), of a condition in which there is too much sugar in the urine.
