This is an archaic chemical suffix for compounds of two elements, for which the standard ending is now ‑ide. Examples that may be encountered in older writings, especially in geology and mining, include sulphuret, a compound of sulphur with another element, a sulphide; carburet, one containing carbon, a carbide.
