This ending appears in the names of some famous cities of the ancient world, such as Persepolis and Heliopolis, and in some US placenames created in imitation, such as Minneapolis, Indianapolis, and Annapolis. Other examples include metropolis (Greek mētēr, mētr‑, mother), the capital or chief city of a country or region; necropolis (Greek nekros, dead person), a cemetery, especially a large one belonging to an ancient city; cosmopolis (Greek kosmos, world), a city inhabited by people from many different countries; megalopolis (Greek megas, megal‑, great), a very large, heavily populated city or urban complex.
