Haemopoiesis (US hemopoiesis) or haematopoiesis (US hematopoiesis)(all from Greek haima, haimat‑, blood) is the production of blood cells and platelets, which occurs in the bone marrow; erythropoiesis (Greek eruthros, red) refers specifically to the production of red blood cells; lymphopoiesis is the formation of lymphocytes. Associated adjectives are formed in ‑poietic: erythropoietic, haemopoietic.
