The building blocks of English
Affixes
-otic
Forming adjectives and nouns.
French ‑otique, via Latin from the Greek adjectival ending ‑ōtikos.
Such words usually correspond to nouns in ‑osis, such as hypnotic, narcotic, neurotic, osmotic, and symbiotic. Some do not have nouns in that form: erotic, exotic. Chaotic was formed from chaos on the model of hypnotic. A few are accidental formations in which ‑ic has been added to a stem ending in ‑ot, such as idiotic or patriotic.
