Examples are pestilent (Latin pestilentus, from pestis, plague), redolent (Latin redolens, from olere, to smell), somnolent (Latin somnolentus, from somnus, sleep), and violent (Latin violentus, violent). Most of the others are compounds of Latin words in volent‑, ‘wishing’ (benevolent, malevolent), or valent‑ (see ‑valent), ‘being worth’ (equivalent, prevalent). See also ‑ulent.
