Latin ‑fication‑, from verbs ending in ‑ficare.
These nouns derive from verbs in ‑fy. There are several hundred examples in English, almost all of which contain the linking vowel ‑i‑ before the ending. They indicate an action or the result of an action. A few examples are amplification, the action of amplifying sound, or the results of doing so; classification, the act of classifying, or the results of classifying; commodification, the action of turning something into a commodity; gratification, the state of being gratified or the act causing it; magnification, the action of magnifying something, or the result of doing so; and simplification, the action of simplifying, or its result.
