Woman.
[English woman.]
This ending appears in a variety of terms denoting a woman who has a given place of residence, nationality, association, occupation, role, or skill: Englishwoman, Yorkshirewoman, laywoman, saleswoman, oarswoman. Such terms are now frequently considered to be sexist and gender-neutral alternatives are preferred. See also -man, -manship, and -person.
