Titanium.
[The element titanium was named by the German chemist Martin Klaproth (1743–1817) from Greek Titan (see the previous entry).]
A titaniferous rock or mineral is one that contains titanium, such as its ores titanomagnetite and titanite (also called sphene). A titanate is a salt containing the anion TiO32-; the adjectives titanous and titanic refer respectively to titanium with a combining power of three and four.
