The key term here is semiotics (also semiology; less commonly semeiotics or semology), the study of signs and symbols and their interpretation or use, of which a practitioner is a semiotician; semiosis is the process of conveying meaning in language or literature; a semiochemical is a pheromone or other chemical that conveys a signal from one organism to another. Closely related is semantic, relating to meaning in language or logic.
