se-

Apart; without.

Latin se, sed.

This prefix is not a living one in English, but occurs in a variety of words imported from Latin, most of them verbs, as in separate (parare, prepare), secede (cedere, go), seclude (claudere, to shut), segregate (grex, flock), secrete (cernere, to sift), select (legere, choose), seduce (ducere, to lead). In secure (cura, care), the prefix has the sense ‘without’.
