The Phanerozoic (Greek zōion, animal) is the aeon in which animal fossils are known, the whole of time since the beginning of the Cambrian period; a phanerocrystalline mineral is one in which the constituent minerals can be seen by the naked eye; phanerogam is an old-fashioned term for a spermatophyte, a plant of a large division comprising those that bear seeds, including the gymnosperms and angiosperms.
