A papilla is a small rounded protuberance on a part or organ of the body. A papilloma is a small wart-like growth on the skin or on a mucous membrane; papillomatosis is a condition in which many papillomas grow in one place; papilloedema (US papilledema) (Greek oidein, to swell) is a swelling in the first part of the optic nerve, the optic papilla, while papilitis is inflammation of it; papillotomy (Greek -tomia, cutting) is a surgical incision in the papilla of the duodenum.
