-otic
Forming adjectives and nouns.
[French -otique, via Latin from the Greek adjectival ending -ōtikos.]
Such words usually correspond to nouns in -osis, such as hypnotic, narcotic, neurotic, osmotic, and symbiotic. Some do not have nouns in that form: erotic, exotic. Chaotic was formed from chaos on the model of hypnotic. A few are accidental formations in which -ic has been added to a stem ending in -ot, such as idiotic or patriotic.
