Forming nouns.
[Old French -ice, from Latin -itia, -itius, -itium.]
Examples include avarice, cowardice, jaundice, justice, malice, notice, novice, precipice, and service. Some words have come from other sources and have taken on the same ending by a process of assimilation: accomplice, apprentice, crevice, lattice, poultice, and practice. See also -ise2.
