hylo-

Woodlands or wood; matter.

Greek hulē, wood, material, or matter.

Some instances refer to wood or woodlands, as in Hylobates (Greek bainein, to go), the genus of the tree-living gibbons. The broader sense of ‘matter’ appears in hylomorphism (Greek morphē, form) the doctrine that matter is the first cause of the universe and that physical objects result from the combination of matter with form, and hylozoism (Greek zōē, life), the doctrine that all matter has life.
