hyal(o)-
Glassy or transparent.
[Greek hualos, glass.]
Hyalin is a clear substance produced especially by the degeneration of epithelial or connective tissues; something hyaline has a glassy, translucent appearance, as does hyaloid, which often refers particularly to the vitreous humour of the eye. The mineral hyalite is a translucent, colourless variety of opal.
