A basidium is a microscopic club-shaped spore-bearing structure produced by fungi called basidiomycetes (Greek mukēs, mukēt-, fungus or mushroom), such as the smuts, rusts, mushrooms, and puffballs; basidio- refers to the presence of a basidium, as in basidiospore, a spore formed in one, or basidiocarp, the fruiting body of basidiomycetes that produces them.
