In botany, a sporangium in ferns and lower plants is a receptacle in which asexual spores are formed; a synangium (Greek sun, with) is a group of united sporangia; a gametangium is a specialized organ or cell in which gametes are formed in algae, ferns, and some other plants. In zoology, a gonangium (Greek gone, generation, seed) is a reproductive polyp of a colonial hydroid.
